A favourite park
A popular green space in Islington that has been carefully restored by residents has been voted one of the UK’s ten favourite parks.
Arlington Square Gardens, which is managed by the Arlington Association, was once a run-down public space. But thanks to the efforts of neighbours and residents it has become a beautiful community garden and now voted one of the best in the country.
“Over just five years, the hard work of friends and neighbours has transformed a run-down, grim public space into a beautiful and cherished garden that has become the heart of our community,” said Gordon McArthur, Chair of the Arlington Association.
With more than 1,700 UK parks and green spaces holding a Green Flag Award and therefore eligible for the People’s Choice, it is testament to the quality of Arlington Square Gardens that it is one of the most loved in the country.
In total, more than 30,000 people voted and this year’s ten favourite parks are dotted across the country from London to South Lanarkshire, Port Talbot to Barnsley.
The Green Flag Award, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, is the international mark of quality green space and the People’s Choice poll reflects just how much communities up and down the country value their parks and green spaces.
“We would like to congratulate Arlington Square Gardens on being voted one of the UK’s ten favourite parks – it is quite an achievement,” said International Green Flag Award Manager Paul Todd.
