Clean Air Day 21 June
We can’t see it but air pollution is real and harms the health of millions. Scientists estimate that over 9,000 people die early in London each year as a result of long-term exposure to poor air quality.
Clean Air Day is a chance to find out more about air pollution, share information with friends and family and do your bit to make our air cleaner and healthier for everyone.
There are many simple things we can do to improve air quality and look after our health.
Here at Islington Council we’ve organised bags of activities and events on Clean Air Day to bring home the impact of air pollution on our health and highlight what we can do about it.
Bikers’ Breakfast for Cyclists, Angel, 8 – 9.30am
Head for the triangular pavement between Goswell Road, City Road and Owen Street where cyclists can pick up a free breakfast and a voucher for a £1 hot drink from local, participating cafes on their way to work.
Angel Clean Air Day event, Angel, 4 – 7pm
Taking place at the same location, you’ll find a host of activities including free bicycle fixing from Dr Bike, security tagging by Angel Police, PedalMe, Ofo Bikes and London Green Cycles plus information on engine idling, Bikeability courses and DriveNow electric cars. And while you’re at it, try your hand at our bike locking competition.
Archway ZEN Clean Air Day event, Archway, Navigator Square, 8am – 6pm
Organised by Archway Zero Emissions Network (ZEN), the event kicks off with free bike maintenance courtesy of Dr Bike from 8am. Then from 11am, you’ll find Pedal Me, Ofo Bikes, London Green Cycles, Pedivan Delivery, Propeller Bikes, GreenMo UK and ETT Industries. Black Box Coffee will be serving free coffee and tea from their cargo bike while Junction Police will carry out bike marking.
London campaigning group, Idling Action will be holding a vehicle idling action event in the morning to educate motorists about the negative effects of leaving their engines running while they’re not moving. And Archway ZEN will be giving people advice on how they can travel more sustainably in a bid to reduce their pollution.
Clean Air Walk
If you want a less polluted, less noisy and less stressful walk than Pentonville Road, then take our new Clean Air Walk, a low pollution route between Kings Cross and Angel. It takes the same time and you can even hear the birds singing!
So come along and join Islington’s Mayor for the inaugural walk. We’ll be meeting outside Kings Cross Station at 11.45am and setting off at 12noon for a calm, clean walk to Angel.
Clean Air Day poster competition
Islington Council asked primary school children to get involved in Clean Air Day in a creative and fun way by designing a poster showing how we can all reduce the amount of pollution we make.
We had lots of entries and here are some of the fabulous winners and runners up. Congratulations and a big thank you to everyone who took part.
The winning two posters plus the four runners up will also be displayed at the Central Library while you’ll find a larger poster exhibition at Islington Museum for one week from Clean Air Day.
