Cooking in the community
Sara Westin-James is a busy Islington mum who sells her homemade food to local residents, and you could too.
“I love that food can make you feel charged and energetic, as well as bringing you memories, comfort and joy,” says Sara.
“I take inspiration from my native Sweden, the vast restaurant and street food scene of London, my ridiculous collection of cookbooks and from memories of my grandmother’s cooking.”
Sara has lived in Islington for the past eight years and manages her time between running the reception at Trullo, a restaurant near Highbury corner, selling her homemade meals through Cookoo, and spending as much time as possible with her family.
“If I can fit in a run and a restaurant visit in between I’m over the moon!” she says.
Sara is one of 20 plus cooks that sell their meals on Cookoo, a new local website that allows people to buy healthy, home cooked food and have it delivered to their desk or door in central London.
The company, based in Goswell Road, encourages cooks to be as ethical as possible, using recyclable packaging and delivery is made on electric bikes only.
Cookoo also helps all cooks get the necessary food hygiene certificates for their home kitchens and donates any food leftovers to local housing association St Mungo’s.
Sara says: “Cooking is such a pure way of caring for other people and I think there’s no better thing than being served a home cooked lunch or dinner.
“I love the freedom of working from home with flexible hours. I wanted to combine my love for food with the health benefits it can bring and Cookoo has proven to be the perfect platform for it!” she says.
