Islington is working – Esther’s story
When Esther wanted to earn some money while she completed her studies, she turned to the council’s Saturday Jobs scheme for help.
The scheme provides paid part-time employment to 16 and 17 year olds in Islington for 2 to 6 hours per week for 12 weeks. Young residents can get their first experience of job applications with the support of council officers to navigate the recruitment process.
Esther was supported to apply for a role with Green & Fortune at their Rotunda restaurant in Kings Cross when she was in year 12 at Central Foundation School.

Esther said: “I believe the experience has been wonderful. It is my first job and I didn’t expect to fit into a work environment so easily – it is so warm and welcoming.
The experience I have gained by working here has made me a better person and now I know a lot more about hospitality, as well as working in such a diverse place.
I love every minute of it and I honestly wouldn’t have asked for a better place to work. Also, the food is great so that’s an extra bonus!”
Esther is now in year 13 and has progressed into a permanent, part-time role at the restaurant.
