Islington’s new comedy night
A new comedy night is coming to the Hen & Chickens Theatre on the last Saturday of every month. Featuring a mixed bill including sketch and character comedy from pro and semi-pro comedians; there will be some TV names working on new material as well as exciting new up-and-comers. We spoke its host Lew Fitz about what he likes best about Islington.
Who are you and what do you do?
I am a comedian and together with my closest friends Josh and Mo run a monthly comedy night at the Hen & Chickens Theatre.
I started writing and performing comedy in Miami in 2013 but grew up in Manchester. I was a semi-finalist of this year’s ‘So You Think You’re Funny’ and a finalist in ‘Florida’s Funniest Comedian’ 2015. I was also the host of ‘Spill the Beans Comedy Show’, voted Best Comedy Night in South Florida.
What do you like most about working in Islington?
Islington is vibrant and cultured, everyone smells lovely. You can do so much and see so many things all in the same space in North London.
If you had a spare 24 hours to spend in the borough what would you do?
Walk around. I’d just walk, go into little shops. Talk to people. Get some fresh bread. Sit in the park. Do some people watching.
Who is your favourite comedian and why?
Right now it’s John Kearns. My favourite changes a lot, as does the comedy landscape but he is a guy that takes risks. Performs every single word. Nothing is lazy and nobody can do what he does.
Tell us a bit about Cuddles for Troubles.
It’s a comedian-ran comedy showcase night on the last Saturday of every month. We want to make it a night for professional names to test new material in a fun space and for emerging comics to have a platform to sell their good stuff.
