My Finsbury Park: Mary le Comte
Mosey Home is a vintage and contemporary furniture and homeware store on Stroud Green Road, which combines rare pieces with less expensive classic and quirky items. We asked founder Mary about the shop and the street.
“We have a passion for mid-century pieces – they are mainly from the 50s to the 70s, but we’ll throw in an 80s piece if we like it, as well as a dash of Art Deco. Anything with a Bauhaus Modernist vibe is welcome. The contemporary pieces we also sell sit well with this style.
We source pieces from all over, and we have a long list of ‘wants’ from customers and interior designers which we try to satisfy. We like to get a balance between collectable objects, and things that are practical and affordable for local homeowners.
We also loan objects for photo shoots – we get a lot of creative people in the shop, from photographers to makers of all kinds, including ceramicists. In response to this creative and engaged community, we’ve set up a series of talks at Park Theatre. I was an events manager at the V&A, so I’ve called on my contacts and we have some great speakers coming to talk about Brutalism and mid-century style. We also run practical workshops on drawing, sewing and ceramics.
I’ve lived in the area since 1997, and it’s great to be part of the mix of shops and restaurants on Stroud Green Road. I like the Crisis store – it’s a boutique charity shop – and Hetty Holland is a fab vintage-concept gift store. You can get classic Spanish tapas at Fabrica, excellent modern cuisine at Season and Max’s Sandwich Shop is award-winning. Plus the Park Theatre is just down the road. It’s a brilliant mix: this has become an area to hang out in rather than pass through.”
