My Finsbury Park: Molly Clift
Park Theatre is a major new venue in Finsbury Park – a neighbourhood theatre with global ambition. With a strong focus on exciting new writing, it’s a must see in the area. We found out more from Molly, a Park Theatre apprentice.
“I’d been unemployed for three months when I saw an advert in the job centre for Park Theatre’s apprenticeships. I studied drama at college so it was a great opportunity: there’s one creative post here, and one technical one, which is my role.
I started in March, helping visiting companies in a very hands-on way – I form part of the tech team for the ‘get in’, which is when theatre sets are assembled. I also assist as an usher – we’re volunteers, and everyone mucks in so you learn about all different aspects of running a theatre.
The theatre runs workshops for people with dementia, and I film the sessions. Jez Bond who is the artistic director here is planning a documentary about dementia, and it’s great to be involved in that, plus there are workshops for kids.
I did the ‘get in’ for the Busker’s Opera, an adaptation of the Beggar’s Opera, set in 2012 and looking at problems in society. We have a ‘pay what you can’ scheme, so that anyone can enjoy the shows. We often have well known visitors – Judi Dench and Ian McKellen are sponsors, and give us lots of support.
I still love to perform – I’m participating in a drama workshop with a German theatre company at the Almeida at the moment, and we’ll be performing a piece in August. It’s also great to be part of the change that is happening in this area.”
Islington Council helps local young people aged 16-24 to find apprenticeships. Find more details.
