Sport Islington Awards

The annual Sport Islington award ceremony, in partnership with Islington Schools, was held at the Islington Assembly Hall recently.

Three time national boxing champion, Sport Islington recipient and former Joanna Brown Trust award winner, Cherrelle Brown was there as the guest speaker, sharing an account of her boxing journey.

By her own admission Cherrelle found the sport of boxing later on in life and it helped her get onto the right track. She wrote down her goals onto paper and with self-belief, perseverance and hard work she was able to achieve them.

After beating Paige Murney of Leicester Unity in the light-welterweight final in April, Cherrelle was crowned National Elite England Boxing champion at under-64kg for the third year in a row.

Ending her speech with two key messages, quoting Nelson Mandela, Cherrelle encouraged the audience to do the best they could in their sporting and academic careers.

The Mayor of Islington was also there to celebrate with the winners and present them with their awards.
