Switching on for Christmas!
The days are drawing in – and Islington is about to become a winter wonderland with a festive stream of dazzling Christmas lights switch-ons.
Town centres from Archway to Whitecross Street are hosting choirs, markets, music, mince pies – and of course Father Christmas.
Come along and get into the festive spirit! The Christmas events and switch-ons, in date order, are:
Angel – Saturday 18 November, switch-on at 5pm, Angel Central
As well as the usual sparkling Christmas lights, there will be new illuminations in Camden Passage and 40 trees lit along Upper Street – the Avenue of Lights, running from Angel Tube to Islington Town Hall. Father Christmas and his elves will perform in the afternoon and switch on the lights in Angel Central at 5pm. The Puss in Boots cast from Hoxton Hall are appearing at 3.30pm, and there will be face-painting and buskers in Chapel Market, with hot chestnuts to enjoy. There will also be music, living statues, mulled wine, mince pies and late-night opening and street entertainment in Camden Passage.
Whitecross Street – Thursday 30 November, 4pm-6pm, switch-on 4.45pm
Festive entertainment includes a Santa’s Grotto with free gifts; free mince pies and cupcakes; music including a festive ukelele band and a choir performance; children’s poetry with storyteller Paul Lyalls; and the Whitecross Street Food Christmas Market, offering a huge range of delicious delights.
Finsbury Park – Friday 1 December, 3.30pm-5pm, switch-on 4.45pm, Fonthill Road
Join Santa Claus and the Mayor of Islington for the lights switch-on at 4.45pm. There will be Christmas carols and mince pies to help you get into the seasonal spirit.

Family entertainment including choirs from Grafton Primary School and Holloway SDA church; other live Christmas songs; face-painting; drummers from Drum Works; mince pies and refreshments, and Father Christmas. Selby’s department store will have special offers during the event including food tastings, prize giveaways and beauty makeovers. Switch-on is at 4.30pm with the Mayor of Islington at Nag’s Head Shopping Centre.
Archway – Sunday 3 December, 1pm-5.30pm, switch-on at 4.30pm, new public space outside Archway Tube
