Car Free Day in Islington

Imagine a city with fewer cars and more places for people. Places for sitting and playing, plants and bikes. This Car Free Day, Islington is turning some parking bays into parklets – places for people, not cars.

Traveling by car is the most polluting way to get around. In fact, pollution can be twice as high inside your car than outside. Moving towards cleaner travel, like walking, cycling and public transport, will improve air quality for everyone and create more space on our streets for people and communities, not cars.

Saturday 22 September will see parklets popping up across the borough. Find out if there is one near you.

Mayton Street, Holloway

Between 11am and 4pm join Holloway Neighbourhood Group for this mini, mini street party. Refreshments and kids games available and The Stress Project are bringing you free taster sessions of massages and reiki. Bliss.

Banner Street, Old Street

Sit and relax in this central London parklet, next to bustling Whitecross Street. For that extra relaxation, local yoga studio AM Power Yoga will be popping along between 12 noon and 1pm for free yoga tutorials – no need for lycra, just swing by and learn a couple of calming stretches.

Islington High Street, Angel

We’re joining forces with the Camden Passage End of Summer Festival to bring you a day of activities. From our parklet outside CoffeeWorks, where you can relax under the temporary trees, down Camden Passage to pick up free samples from the local shops, to Camden Walk, where we’ve closed the road for the day to fill it with grass, deckchairs, music and activities. Bring your bike for a free maintenance check from Dr Bike between 10am and 1pm and get it security marked by Angel Police. Plus live music and activities throughout the day.

Sobell Centre, Finsbury Park

Always fancied giving boxing a go but never stepped into the ring? Free trials of boxing, for all ages and abilities, will be taking place in the Sobell car park. Get moving and try something new.  Take part in our mini challenges on the rowing machine and exercise bike to win some great prizes. Pop by between 11am and 1pm.

Street Party in Archway

Join Archway Zero Emissions Network for an afternoon filled with samba, smoothies and cycling. From 1pm-5pm Giesbach Road in Archway will be transformed with trees, seating and activities for all including:

  • Children’s cycle sessions
  • Flower headdress making
  • Samba performance and workshop
  • Pedal powered smoothie makers
  • Football challenges with Little Stars Coaching

Over on Navigator Square meet at 10am for a training and action event with Idling Action.

Dr Bike will be on hand for free bikes checks and maintenance 2pm-5pm.

We are also holding an anti-idling event in Bunhill on Tuesday 18 September alongside Idling Action and Old Street District. If you would like to volunteer, sign up here.

And last, but not least, Friday 21 September is Walk to School day, with St John’s Upper Holloway giving out reflective snap bands to any student that takes to the streets on their feet.
