It’s not too late to take action and kick start the year by making healthier choices throughout January. Whether it’s drinking less alcohol, quitting smoking or getting more active, there are plenty of local services and support to help you stay motivated and reach your goals!

Get active 

It can be hard to make healthy changes, but there is a lot of support available across Islington to help you to get started. Islington offers lots of opportunities to get active, from Family Fit sessions, to Active Meditation and Gentle Pilates for over 50s, Izzwalks (pictured), a weekly walking group that also runs free fitness sessions at Highbury Leisure Centre on Tuesdays at 9.30am and at Sobell Leisure Centre on Saturdays at 9am, and plenty more.

Drinking less alcohol

Join the four million people taking part in the Dry January challenge. Lots of us feel like we’re drinking a bit too much, or too often, or we could just do with some time off. Dry January is the perfect way to reset your relationship with alcohol. It only takes three weeks to break a habit, so this could be your route to happier, healthier drinking long-term. During Dry January last year, 88% of people who took part in the challenge saved money, 71% slept better and 58% lost weight.

Cutting out the cigarettes 

The New Year is also a great opportunity to take of breath of fresh air and stop smoking. – It’s the best thing you will ever do for your health, your family, and your wallet! For free support, Breathe is Islington’s stop smoking service that offers confidential advice to people who live, work or study in the borough. Speak to Breathe advisers and receive the support you need to quit smoking for good.
