Islington’s Hollywood jeweller
If you go to watch the new Tim Burton Dumbo film, which was released on 29 March, look out for the necklace that was designed and created in Islington.
Islington jeweller Stephen Einhorn created pieces for Hollywood from his workshop in Upper Street, including Angelina Jolie’s necklace in Maleficent and Cate Blanchett’s Wicked Stepmother’s ring in Disney’s Cinderella. For Dumbo, he created a necklace for the main character, Milly Farrier, played by Thandie Newton’s daughter (pictured below), Nico Parker and a watch fob chain for Max Medici, played by Danny Devito.
Stephen’s family came to Islington in 1963, so he has lived here pretty much all his life. “It has changed a lot,” he said. “I love Islington’s diversity and social mix. I can walk to all my favourite places – the Barbican, South Bank and Up West. Everything is here though if you don’t want to stray too far. Great shops and I love Highbury Fields where I play a lot of tennis,” he said.
He founded his business in 1995 with his wife Jane Best and their first workshop in the area was in Glebe Road, behind The Waste in Kingsland Road).
He said: “Our landlord set fire to the building and we moved to where we are now in Upper Street. It was originally an electronics workshop with no shop front at all. The workshop used to be part of a department store called Rackstraws and the workshop that we use was actually part of the goods yard. We still have a tiny bit of the old sign; we have the R.”
Film studios go to great lengths to ensure props are made as beautifully and authentically as possible and Stephen only uses the finest materials and best craftsmen and women.
His inspiration comes from living and working in London. He said: “You get the opportunity of meeting such a mix of inspirational people here. I love the diversity of our customers. We have people who have only just moved to the area and then we have customers who have lived here all their lives.
“It’s an interesting place to live. I feel very at home here and know most of my neighbours.”
Stephen’s creations include:
Charlize Theron’s magnificent bronze stag beetle collar in Snow White and the Huntsman
Cate Blanchett’s Wicked Stepmother’s ring in Disney’s Cinderella
Johnny Depp’s scene stealing onyx ring in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows
Brad Pitt’s crucifix in Allied
Angelina Jolie’s necklace in Maleficent
