Meet Highbury Walkers

Highbury Walkers provides weekly walking sessions in a sociable and supportive atmosphere.

The group was set up in April last year by local people who had just completed the Exercise on Referral course, a 12 week programme offering a range of activities such as swimming, walking and green gym sessions.

The group wanted to maintain their fitness and enjoyed walking together, so Highbury Walkers was born and in less than a year it has grown to 30 members.

Jennifer Hurstfield, Chair, says: “We are a diverse group of people and have developed friendships, increased our fitness, while all the time having fun doing it! Any group looking to do something similar needs to keep it simple, accessible and fun.”

The group’s two main aims are to promote good physical and mental health for Islington residents of various ages, backgrounds and health; and to reduce social isolation by providing an opportunity for local people to meet and enjoy outdoor exercise together.

It currently walks around Highbury Fields, but in summer plans to organise trips further afield to try one of the Islington walking routes or to Hampstead Heath. The group is also walking with IzzWalkz, another local walking group.
