Taking the leap into employment
Michelle was referred to the iWork team by Job Centre Plus, after she had completed various workshops and the work programme without successfully finding a job.
She told the team she had been unemployed for almost 9 years since she was 21 years old and she felt fed-up and depressed. Michelle also said she had put on a lot of weight which was causing illness and had fallen into debt during this period. After so many years trying to turn her life around, she had lost all confidence in her own abilities and lacked self-worth.
The support iWork offer
Islington Council’s iWork team was setup to provide unemployed residents with bespoke support that helps them to overcome the challenges they face to get into work. We assigned Michelle a dedicated iWork coach to support her one on one.
The iWork coach started by helping Michelle to address her health issues. She was put in touch with the right people to receive free counselling for depression and free professional weight management advice.
The coach also introduced Michelle to local organisations who offer free, confidential support to manage debts and financial hardship.
In one of the coaching sessions, Michelle was wary off updating her CV in the way her coach had suggested because she felt that her old one had been good enough to get her interviews in the past. The iWork coach suggested using the updated CV to apply for two roles and Michelle’s old CV to apply for two roles. She was successfully invited to interview for the two roles applied for using her updated CV.
Before the interviews, the iWork coach organised for Michelle to have practice panel interviews so that she could learn how to present herself in the best way.
Michelle was offered both jobs and is happy working in one of the roles now. She feels free from anxiety and confident to enjoy socialising with friends again for the first time in years.
She is on a three-month weight management programme and receives free counselling for the depression she felt previously.
Michelle accepted the debt management advice and is now on an affordable repayment plan.
Islington Council and its partners are ready to support anyone into a job, apprenticeship or training who wants to make that step. Get in touch now if you want to turn your life around like Michelle did or refer someone you know who could benefit from our support.
