What’s on during Carers Week, 7 to 13 June
In Islington there are an estimated 16,300 unpaid carers.
Many people do not recognise themselves as carers, they simply think of themselves as supporting a parent or loved one. This means many people miss out on vital support to help them in their caring role.
The aim of National Carers Week (7-13 June), is to raise awareness of this issue.
Islington Carers Hub is encouraging Islington residents to let anyone they know ‘looking after a friend or family member’ about events in Carers Week. They’re also asking people to show unpaid carers support and appreciation by baking them a cake!
Baking ‘Cakes for Carers’
Ahead of National Carers Week, Islington Carers Hub is asking residents to show unpaid carers support and appreciation, by baking them a cake in the run up to Carers Week.
As part of the Cakes for Carers campaign, Islington Carers Hub volunteer, Natascha, ran an ‘Easy to Bake Cakes’ session to inspire people to Bake a Cake for a friend or neighbour who they know are looking after someone. “It’s always lovely to have a cake to offer visiting family or to take round to a kind neighbour or friend as a gift.”
What’s on during Carers Week?
Islington Carers Hub will be hosting a week of online events to raise awareness of the support that’s available in the borough for unpaid carers – this includes everything from help with finances and benefits to support available to help a loved one living with cancer, dementia, learning difficulties or mental health issues.
There will also be a Virtual Cuppa with a chance to chat with other carers and Relaxation Events including free yoga, self-care advice & hand massage and dance & movement sessions.
