Windrush Day celebrations

Sunday 22 June is Windrush Day, the anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush in Britain from Jamaica – and a chance to celebrate the contributions and sacrifice of the Windrush Generation, who helped rebuild Britain after the Second World War. Join the celebrations:

Migration Blanket exhibition

Tuesday 17 June–Tuesday 15 July
Islington Museum, 245 St John Street, EC1V 4NB

In this exhibition, Islington Museum celebrates the perspective and stories of our diverse borough. From June 17-July 15 the museum will display works from Salma Zulfiqar’s Migration Blanket Project, weaving together the stories and experiences of refugees and migrants in our community.

The permanent exhibition also features objects and stories directly from the Windrush generation, such as Pearline Williamson a dedicated NHS nurse at the Whittington.

No need to book: just turn up during museum opening hours.

Family fun day

Saturday 21 June, 12noon–5pm
Jean Stokes Community Centre, Coatbridge House, Carnoustie Drive, N1 0DX

Families in Harmony – an African-Caribbean and dual heritage kinship care organisation – and The Virtual School are putting on a fun day of family-friendly activities at Jean Stokes Community Centre on Saturday 21 June, 12noon–5pm.

The day is themed around the links between kinship care and Windrush. Children were in many cases left with grandparents and relatives, to allow the Windrush generation to travel to Britain.

Join the fun, make new friends and leave empowered.
