Winners of the Mayor’s Civic Awards 2017

Roger D’Elia
At the heart of the Westbourne Estate for three years, Roger has proven time and time again to be a great resident representative and now chairs a very strong and committed tenants and residents committee.

Jordan Frieda
On the advisory group for the Friendship Network for three years, Jordan continues to support it. Not only has he given advice and financial expertise, but under the “Dine and Donate” scheme, his restaurant Trullo has raised over £30,000 for it since 2013.

Anne Marie Garbutt
A volunteer for the Islington Heritage Service since 2011, Anne Marie selflessly donates her valuable spare time helping others in the community. The information she provides is crucial to the dissemination of Islington’s history and heritage to the public and without her, much of this would not be achieved.

Alexandra Mary Mears (known as Sasha)
Until recently, Sasha was the Joint-Co-ordinator of the Angel Canal Festival. She has been involved for over 17 years, taking over its financial running and injecting money from her own business until grants and donations were made.

Penny Seal
A prolific volunteer, Penny has worked tirelessly over many years in a voluntary capacity to make a difference and improve the lives of Islington residents. Born and brought up here, Penny has lived and worked in Islington all her life and is seen as an unsung hero.

Alex Silcott
When the organisers of the annual Islington Remembrance Day Parade were left without a band to lead it, Alex, as leader of the Drum Corps, stepped in. The Drum Corps has continued to take part for the past 10 years or more with very little recognition.

John White
A selfless local resident who has given his time and knowledge for 30 years to improve community spirit on the New Orleans Estate through gardening. John maintains many green areas on the estate, along with the community centre garden.
