Support for families made simple
Family life can be rewarding, but it’s not always easy. That’s where Islington’s Family Information Service (FIS) comes in. Whether you need help finding childcare, advice on parenting, or ideas for activities, the FIS team is here to support families with children from birth to 25.
What does FIS offer?
FIS can help with everything from free early learning and childcare to stay-and-play sessions, holiday activities, and parenting programmes. They also connect families to council and community services.
If you prefer not to call, you can email or explore the Family Directory online. The team responds quickly because they want families to feel supported and get the help they need.
Free early learning and childcare
Working families can get 30 hours of free childcare a week from the term after their child turns nine months until they start school. Apply by 31 December for a January start and remember to renew your code every three months.
Families on benefits, low incomes, or with no recourse to public funds can get 15 hours a week for two-year-olds, and all three- and four-year-olds automatically receive 15 hours.
Not sure where to start? FIS can guide you through the process and help you find a nursery or childminder.
Helping parents feel confident
Choosing childcare can feel daunting. FIS encourages parents to visit settings, meet staff, and ask questions. They’ve even created videos in different languages to reassure families.
As FIS manager Becky Pryce explains:
“Seeing children learn through play helps parents feel confident. My own two-year-old goes to a childminder and loves it—his communication skills have improved, and he’s learning to socialise.”
