Top tips: school attendance

Getting your child to school every day can sometimes feel like a challenge – but every day really does count. Here are 10 easy tips to help boost your child’s attendance and set them up for success:

1. Stick to a routine

Children thrive on routine. Set regular bedtimes and wake-up times – even on weekends – to help mornings run smoothly.

2. Talk about why school matters

Let your child know that school isn’t just about lessons – it’s where they build friendships, confidence, and skills for life.

3. Keep an eye on absences

It’s easy to lose track of missed days. Keep a simple calendar to monitor attendance.

4. Stay in touch with teachers

If your child is struggling – whether it’s with learning, friendships, or something else – teachers can help. Don’t be afraid to reach out.

5. Plan ahead for appointments

Try to book doctor’s or dentist’s visits outside of school hours. If that’s not possible, aim for early or late appointments so your child misses as little school as possible.

6. Prep the night before

Lay out clothes, pack bags, and prep lunches the night before. A calm morning makes it easier to get out the door on time.

7. Celebrate the wins

Praise your child for getting to school on time. A sticker chart or a small treat at the end of the week can go a long way.

8. Watch for worries

If your child is anxious or reluctant to go to school, gently ask why. They might be facing something they need help with, like bullying or feeling behind in class.

9. Avoid term-time holidays

It’s tempting, but missing school for holidays can make it harder for your child to keep up and feel confident.

10. Be a role model

Show your child that being on time and showing up matters – whether it’s for work, appointments, or school.
