Changing lives through fostering
In Islington, children from a wide range of backgrounds come into care. Many need to stay close to their schools, friends and communities. This means there is an ongoing need for local foster carers who can provide stability, care and understanding.
We spoke to one of Islington’s dedicated foster carers.
Meet Fatimatu
Fatimatu has been fostering with Islington Council for 19 years and has cared for 18 children and young people, including teenagers.
A journey built on compassion
Fatimatu has always been passionate about helping young people. Before fostering, she worked in youth clubs and prisons and completed courses in social care and childcare.
Her son suggested fostering as a career. After attending an information session and speaking with the fostering team, she realised she could make a real difference.
Like many people, she had concerns at first. “Fostering is not always easy, especially when building trust,” she says. “What helps is creating a calm and accepting environment.”
She also highlights the importance of family support in helping children feel welcome and part of the household.
What fostering is really like
Fatimatu’s first placement was a 16-year-old young person. “It was exciting but also an adjustment,” she says. “Through patience, kindness and listening, we built a strong relationship.”
They are still in touch today. “Seeing her now with her own career and family is very special.”
For Fatimatu, the most rewarding part is seeing young people grow and succeed. “It has been a privilege. I am so proud of them.”
What it takes to foster
There is no single type of foster carer. You do not need formal qualifications, and you do not need to own your home or be in a relationship. What matters most is being able to offer a safe and caring home, along with a spare bedroom for a child over three.
According to Fatimatu, important qualities include:
- Patience and empathy
- Good communication
- Being calm and supportive
- A willingness to learn
She also stresses the importance of having a strong support network and working closely with professionals.
Support every step of the way
Islington Council provides foster carers with a range of support, including:
- A dedicated social worker
- Ongoing training
- 24-hour support
- Weekly allowances from £415 to £895
- Access to the Circles of Support programme
Fatimatu says this support makes a big difference. “You can share experiences, get advice and feel part of a supportive community.”
Breaking down misconceptions
Some people never consider fostering because of common myths including that you need to own your home or be a perfect parent
While fostering can be challenging, it is also rewarding and well supported.
Be the difference
Foster carers are people from all walks of life. By fostering with Islington Council, you can help a child stay connected to their community and provide stability at a crucial time.
“It is a journey,” says Fatimatu. “You can take it step by step. It is rewarding and fulfilling.”
