Crossing for half a century
For five decades, Margaret Lonergan has guided generations of Holloway children safely across Liverpool Road and charmed just about everyone along the way. We stopped by her famous corner to hear her stories from 50 years on the crossing.
How did you get into the job?
I’d worked for the police for 25 years, so my crossing was originally covered by them before the council took over. A friend of mine was leaving her job as a crossing guard and suggested I apply. I was a housewife then, so I thought, why not? Next thing I know, a policewoman is on my doorstep measuring me for a uniform! That was in late 1975 and I’ve been here ever since.
You’ve been a crossing guard for a long time, what’s kept you here all these years?
The people. Watching the children grow up is wonderful. It gets, you up and out early and it’s wholesome. Winter can be a bit grim – I’m here rain or shine – but the little ones make it worth it! At first, they look at you with bemusement, and it takes them a bit of time to warm up. But then suddenly you’re getting waves and giggles.
They come back and sometimes you don’t recognise them. Some of the older ones, in their 50s will see me and say you’re still here? I tell them I own this corner now!
Margaret in her natural habitat!
Do you have a favourite part of your job?
I’m usually quite shy, and before I started, I only had a couple of close friends. This role gave me the chance to get to know people. I love meeting the parents and chatting to the kids, even one smile can lift your whole day.
How have you changed over the years?
When I first started, I was so nervous. I’d have nightmares about accidents. It took me a little while to ease into it, and I’ve become a lot more confident. It’s a big responsibility, keeping young people safe, and I’m proud get to do it.
