Dancing through life with Civic Award winner
A not-for-profit group, Vibe4Life run affordable fitness classes, wellbeing workshops, and social events designed to make health and movement accessible”
Having recently won a prestigious Mayor’s Civic Award for her work, founder Onyeka spoke to us about movement, community and her dream of getting the whole borough dancing.
How did it feel to win a Civic Award?
It felt humbling, exciting and really rewarding all at once. When I do this work, I’m not thinking about recognition. I’m focused on encouraging people to be healthy, active and to move!
Being recognised felt especially meaningful because it also reflected the amazing community that has grown around Vibe4Life.
What motivates you to do this work?
It’s the people and community. I’ve lived in Islington for more than 25 years, so these are people I see all the time! When I’m walking around the borough or spending time with family.
I’ve always loved dance and fitness, and what started as something personal became something that I wanted to share with others. Seeing people smile, enjoy themselves and feel healthier because of the classes brings me so much joy.
I love how the classes bring people together, with children dancing alongside older residents. There’s a great community spirit.
Why are community fitness classes so important?
For me, the classes are about much more than exercise. They support mental health, physical health, confidence and connection. It’s important for younger people to have spaces where they can move, socialise and do something positive for themselves. As you get older, you really appreciate how important movement is. I run classes for older residents too, and seeing the joy it gives them is amazing. People are much more likely to stay active when they genuinely enjoy it.
What impact do the classes have on the community?
One of the biggest things I’ve seen is the friendships people build through the classes. People often arrive not knowing anyone, but by the end they’re chatting, laughing and encouraging each other. Over time people really become part of our community. Once the music starts, everyone is equal and everyone belongs there.
What would you say to young people thinking about getting involved?
I recently heard a quote that really stayed with me: “You can’t be what you don’t see.”
It is so important for youngsters to see positive examples around them and realise there are so many different paths open to them. Something as simple as attending a community dance class inspires confidence, and even a future career.
What are you looking forward to this year?
I’m excited about upcoming community wellbeing and dance events this summer, including a big event at Caxton House Community Centre with fitness sessions, a live DJ, health talks and wellbeing activities.
One of my dreams is to organise a huge outdoor dance in one of Islington’s parks and maybe a major celebration at Islington Assembly Hall. I really want to get Islington dancing.
How can residents get involved?
I run affordable community fitness classes at St Mary’s on Upper Street and I’m always encouraging new residents to come along and give it a try. Vibe4Life is all about helping people feel healthier, happier and more connected through movement, music and community.
