How Islington Council’s 2026/27 budget is making it happen
Islington Council has confirmed its 2026/27 budget and at its heart is one clear aim: helping to make it happen for residents.
This year’s plans focus on protecting the services people rely on every day, investing in our neighbourhoods, and creating a more equal, fairer Islington for everyone.
From caring for older neighbours to maintaining parks, supporting families, and building much needed new homes, the budget shapes the services that touch all our lives.
How the budget supports you
The council provides hundreds of services day in, day out. This year’s budget builds on that foundation and puts money where it matters most. Key investments include:
- A new £5 million fund to accelerate progress on residents’ top priorities and help make it happen for Islington.
- £324 million for council homes over the next decade—improving warmth, safety and energy efficiency for thousands of families.
- £58 million to buy new council homes, helping local people in greatest need.
- £28 million for the Council Tax Support Scheme, one of the most generous in the country, supporting around one in five households.
- More than £4 million over 10 years to fix potholes and keep Islington’s streets safe and accessible for everyone.
Why it matters
Year after year, the council’s budget turns plan into real, tangible improvements for people of all ages and backgrounds. In recent years, investment has helped deliver:
- 354 new homes built since 2022
- A new day and night neighbourhood patrol team, tackling antisocial behaviour and helping residents feel safe
- The refurbished Sobell Leisure Centre, now enjoyed by more than 200,000 visitors since reopening
- Over £2 million put into parks, open spaces and playgrounds, creating greener, brighter places to unwind
- £2 million invested in recycling facilities on estates, supporting local action on the climate crisis
Making it happen together
This year’s budget isn’t just about balancing the books. It’s about putting Islington residents first by creating warm, safe homes, backing families, improving our neighbourhoods, and investing in the services that make daily life better.
Every pound is aimed at building a fairer, more equal Islington. And with your input and your community spirit, we’ll keep making it happen.
