Thriving Neighbourhoods – we’re making it happen
Thriving Neighbourhoods is a £10 million investment launched in September 2022 to transform communal spaces across Islington’s housing estates, using money we require from developers who build in the borough.
The council wants to create more safe, vibrant, and inclusive places, delivered with and for residents. This ensures that when development happens in Islington, everybody benefits.
Islington Council has delivered 265 improvements and counting, including upgraded play spaces, enhanced recycling hubs, better lighting, landscaping and revitalised community centres. These changes are improving everyday life for thousands of people.

The council designed Thriving Neighbourhoods to be community shaped, evidence led and fairness driven. Over three years, residents submitted thousands of proposals.
The three most important priorities were:
- Inclusive play — ensuring every child can play safely, close to home;
- Environmental improvements & recycling — improving cleanliness and environmental quality;
- Security & safety — addressing fears about antisocial behaviour.

Residents across Islington have been sharing how these improvements are affecting their daily lives. Here’s some of what we’ve heard:
“The new gate has made a tremendous difference in our daily lives, especially for my wife, who now feels safe returning home alone… the experience could not be more positive.”
“It’s been amazing to have a safe, clean and fun place to play so close to home, and to see it bringing young people in our area together.”
“The playground improvements are really thoughtfully done, executed to a high quality and have made a tangible improvement to the estate. From this local father of two – thank you for investing in this improvement!”
“The addition of bike stands provides a practical solution for residents to store their bicycles securely… It’s reassuring to see the council investing in initiatives that improve residents’ quality of life.”
“Thank you for installing my back garden fence gate. I can now go over to the communal garden area and socialise with neighbours and tenants. Until now, I was very isolated… your efforts will not be forgotten.”
Thriving Neighbourhoods has transformed how the council invests in shared spaces. Who benefits? Residents on every estate and in every ward, with a focus on those with the greatest need: children and young people, disabled residents, older people, and communities previously underserved.
We’re going to keep Making It Happen for those who need it most.
