Every year, Islington honours the incredible individuals and groups who make a positive difference in the local community with the Mayor’s Civic and Ben Kinsella Awards. These awards recognise those who selflessly dedicate their time and energy to supporting their communities, fostering inclusivity and making Islington a better place for everyone.  

At this year’s ceremony, each winner was presented with a certificate and award from the Mayor of Islington, Cllr Anjna Khurana, in recognition of their contributions. The shortlisted nominees for the Ben Kinsella Award were awarded an exclusive No More Red football shirt, courtesy of Adidas and Arsenal. 

Sidney Fossey, Ben Kinsella Award winner

This year’s winner of the Ben Kinsella Award is Sidney Fossey, recognised for his incredible dedication as a fire cadet. He has led fire safety workshops for pupils and helped to improve green spaces at Tufnell Park Community Plant Nursery.

Michelle Akpata, Mayor’s Civic Award winner

Michelle has been recognised with a Mayor’s Civic Award for her commitment to volunteering, which she has done since 2011. From renovating Robert Blair Primary School to supporting The Garden Classroom and serving as a Library Reading Champion, Michelle has dedicated herself to a variety of causes. She has also volunteered at Moorfields Eye Hospital and as a guide runner for blind and partially sighted athletes.

Seyda Ozcan, Mayor’s Civic Award winner

Seyda has played a key role in supporting the Mildmay Community Centre, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. As a leader of the community co-op and food bank, Seyda has helped make the centre a welcoming and supportive space while organising numerous community events.

Parent Empowerment Champions (PECs), Mayor’s Civic Award winners

The PECs received recognition for their work supporting families in Islington and Camden. This dedicated group of 14 individuals helps keep young people safe online and tackles violence through workshops, events and panels, and their United Against Violence podcast, which has reached more than 2,000 parents.

George Brade, posthumous Mayor’s Civic Award winner

George was posthumously honoured for his lasting impact on Islington. A caretaker at Whittington Park Community Centre for more than 30 years, George was also a passionate steel pan musician, teaching children and performing at local events.

Sue Brownson, Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Service to Islington

The first-ever Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Service to Islington was presented to Sue Brownson, in recognition of more than 40 years of dedication to supporting deaf and special needs children in the borough. Through her work at Laycock Primary School, Sue has helped create a nurturing environment where deaf pupils can thrive and reach their full potential.
