An internship can be the first step towards a rewarding career. For Islington resident Mohammed Yaaseen Khalique, known as Yas, it opened the door to a future he hadn’t imagined.

Yas joined software company TechnologyOne as an intern and has since secured a permanent role as a Project Support Officer. His story is one example of how opportunities such as internships, apprenticeships and work experience can help local people build skills, confidence and take the next step into work. 

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you found out about the internship opportunity

My name is Mohammed Yaaseen Khalique, although everyone here calls me Yas, and I’m now a Project Support Officer at TechnologyOne. Before this, most of my work experience was in hands-on, physical labour roles, so I had very little experience in a corporate environment. I came across the internship while looking for an opportunity to gain new skills, experience and challenge myself by trying something completely different. 

What were you hoping to achieve when you started the internship?

My main goal was simply to gain experience. I wanted to learn how a professional workplace operates, see whether a career in project support was right for me, and push myself outside my comfort zone. 

What skills, experiences or opportunities did you gain during your placement?

I gained experience working on real customer projects alongside Project Managers and Consultants. I learned how to organise meetings, take professional notes, manage project documentation, support customers and work with different teams across the business. More than anything, I developed confidence, stronger communication skills and a much better understanding of how large projects are delivered. 

How did it feel when you were offered a full-time job, and what does that mean for you?

It honestly meant everything to me. Going into the internship, I never imagined I would be offered a permanent role. Being offered a full-time position as a Project Support Officer was one of the proudest moments of my professional life. It showed me that all the hard work had paid off and gave me confidence that TechnologyOne believed in my potential. 

How has this opportunity impacted you personally, as well as professionally?

Professionally, it has given me a career that I genuinely enjoy and opportunities that I never thought I would have. Personally, it has helped me believe in myself. I started the internship with a lot of self-doubt, but the support from everyone at TechnologyOne helped me grow in confidence. I’ve met amazing people, learned so much and found a place where I feel valued. 

What advice would you give to other young people who are looking for work or trying to gain experience?

Don’t let a lack of experience stop you from applying. I nearly convinced myself not to apply because I didn’t think I was the right fit, but taking that chance completely changed my life. Be willing to learn, ask questions and step outside your comfort zone. You don’t have to know everything on day one. Having the right attitude and a willingness to learn can take you much further than you think.
