Meet Islington’s new storytellers

From hidden alleyways and historic landmarks to the people who helped shape the borough, Islington is full of stories waiting to be told. Now, a newly qualified group of tour guides is ready to help residents and visitors discover them.

The latest group of Clerkenwell & Islington tour guides was welcomed by the Mayor of Islington, Cllr Rosaline Ogunro, at a special ceremony in the Mayor’s Parlour at Islington Town Hall after completing an intensive seven-month training programme.

As the Mayor’s official tour guides, the graduates have spent months learning about the borough’s fascinating history, iconic buildings and remarkable residents, while developing the skills needed to lead engaging and accessible tours.

Congratulating the group on their achievement, the Mayor highlighted the power of storytelling and the important role guides play in bringing local history to life for new audiences.

Quoting author Philip Pullman, she said: “After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.”

Each graduate received an official Islington Guided Walks badge, recognising the extensive classroom and on-street training they have completed.

Whether you’re keen to uncover the stories behind familiar streets, step inside some of Islington’s most historic buildings or simply see the borough from a new perspective, there are plenty of opportunities to join a guided walk.

Tours explore neighbourhoods across Islington and Clerkenwell, as well as local landmarks including Caledonian Tower, Canonbury Tower and St Mary’s Church. Guides also lead tours at St John’s Gate and Union Chapel.

Feeling inspired? Applications are now open for the next Clerkenwell & Islington Tour Guiding Course for anyone interested in becoming one of the Mayor’s official tour guides.
