Staying safe after dark
As the days get shorter and the nights draw in, it’s important to take extra care when travelling around the borough. Islington is an amazing and welcoming place for everyone no matter who you are. There are simple steps we can all take to help keep ourselves and others safe.
Street harassment is never acceptable and should be reported. This includes behaviours such as blocking someone’s path, persistent questioning, unwanted physical contact, following, intimidation and catcalling. Reporting incidents helps the police understand where problems are happening and take action. You can report non-emergency incidents online or by calling 101.
Looking out for one another can make a real difference. Trust your instincts, if something doesn’t feel right, move to a safe place and seek help.
If you ever feel unwell or worried for your safety while out in Islington, help is close at hand. There are more than 300 Safe Havens across the borough where trained staff can provide support. Look out for the Safe Havens logo in a window or visit islington.gov.uk/SafeHavens to find your nearest location.
Plan your journey home in advance and, if using a taxi, make sure it is a licensed vehicle or black cab.
Keep phones and valuables secure, particularly in busy areas, and avoid using your phone near the roadside where it could be targeted by thieves.
If you are experiencing domestic abuse, contact Solace on 020 3795 5070 or email advocacy@solacewomensaid.org.
In an emergency, always call 999.
